The Enso Karate Experience

As we celebrate our 20th year as a dojo, Enso Karate is proud to be a leader in martial arts instruction in the Chicago area.

We train in Shotokan Karate, and welcome new or returning youth, adults, and families to join our dojo to learn this martial arts discipline. Leading the dojo are Sensei Jay Nacu and Sensei Denise Nacu who have over 25 years of experience offering high-quality karate instruction. They are both lifelong educators and karateka for life who love to share their karate knowledge and bring out the best in each individual through karate-do.

Enso students and their families have a strong sense of community because that’s what we are — a community. Instructors, students, and parents form deep connections and lasting friendships.

We love being in the center of the city, where students from all neighborhoods come together to shape the mind, body, and spirit while forging lifelong friendships.

Enso offers an intensive competition team experience for those who are interested. Many of our athletes have gone on to represent the U.S.A. in national and international tournaments.

Through special training opportunities and events, we welcome instructors and athletes from across the nation and world to provide our students with a uniquely diverse array of perspectives on karate training.

We offer in-person training 6 days a week, with classes in both Chicago’s South Loop and Oak Park. We are offer our Online Dojo experience, allowing students to join from anywhere! See our current schedule of classes.

Train 1x/week, 2x/week, or unlimited — whatever is right for you! Prices include the cost of a gi for first-time students. Learn more about tuition and registration.

Training with Enso during COVID-19

We launched our Online Dojo in March 2020 as a way to continue training and connecting with our students as the global COVID-19 pandemic emerged. Our students showed amazing resilience and dedication, even with the unique challenges that come with online training.

In April 2021, we began experimenting with some limited in-person offerings in addition to our online classes.  And in June 2021, we began a regular schedule of in-person classes and online training, in addition to our library of video tutorials, in-person and online social events for youth and adults, Pop-up Sensei events, weekly challenges, and a private Facebook group.

Throughout this period, we have tried to apply lessons from karate-do to get us through — the importance of being alert, staying calm in stressful situations, and persevering in the face of difficulty. Plus, we have been able to use our creativity, resourcefulness, and technical know-how too!

We want to express a big thank you to our instructors who have made it possible to keep our dojo going strong, and to our Enso Karate students and families for their support and friendship.
