Building discipline in a positive, fun environment

The Kinder Karate program introduces young children (ages 4-5) to karate training in a fun, disciplined setting. Stretching, warm-up, and basics are taught to children at an age-appropriate level. Activities involve following the instructor’s directions, learning dojo etiquette and self-control. Games and exercises help to develop strength, coordination, and balance. This class provides a foundation for karate training in the Youth Program (ages 6 and up).

Goals for Kinder Karate Students

Develop discipline for martial arts training.
Students will learn how to bow before entering and leaving the training floor, learn how to follow a warm-up/stretching routine, and learn how to lead the class in counting and demonstrating techniques.

Develop age-appropriate motor skills.
For example, activities involve running, jumping, balance, posture, and coordination.

Develop social skills.
For example, the class involves taking turns, following directions, sportsmanship, and helping others.

Learn basic karate techniques.
Students focus on learning specific techniques that are needed to work towards yellow belt. Self-control and respect for others are always emphasized; therefore, students at this age are not put in sparring situations.

Why Teach Karate to Kids?

We believe that martial arts training is not only a way to learn how to defend oneself in a physical situation, but is a “way of life” that teaches self-control, discipline, respect, confidence, and mental focus. Especially for young students, we believe these are the skills that can help them handle difficult situations and avoid getting into trouble. The physical aspects of karate training provide a fun form of exercise that can help develop healthy attitudes toward fitness that can benefit them in karate and other sports as they grow older. And, to study a traditional martial art like Shotokan Karate involves the student a continuing pursuit of learning about its history, philosophy, and culture.
