    Black Belt Celebration & Dojo Holiday Party

    6:00pm-10:00pm

    One Lake Brewing, 1 Lake Street, Oak Park, IL 60302

    We are excited to hold this event in the Oak Park area, where a good number of this year’s examinees are based. One Lake Brewing is about a 15-20 minute drive from the Chicago dojo and is located across the street from the Green Line (Austin stop). Parking is available in the surrounding area.

    Event Tickets – $45 for adults and teens (13+) and $35 for youth (12 and below). An event ticket is required for all attendees. Ticket prices are set to cover our expenses only, which include the dinner, tax, gratuity, and the fee for us to occupy the entire restaurant for the evening. If you have particular dietary needs, let us know so that we can make arrangements with the venue. Please purchase your tickets online by December 3 or send an email to have us process the payment for you.

    Schedule:

    • 6:15 – 7:00 pm – Black Belt Celebration. Ground level of One Lake Brewing. At this time, Enso instructors will say a few words about each candidate and present them with their belt and certificate of rank. 
    • 7:00 – 10:00 pm – Celebration and Dojo Holiday Party. We will take over the whole One Lake Brewing building, including the covered rooftop! Let’s take this time to celebrate the achievements of our newly ranked students, our amazing dojo community, and a year of training and friendship. The dinner buffet will be available all evening.
    • 8:00 pm – Private holiday concert by the Lyric Opera Stage Artists (LOSA)! As a treat (through a generous donation!), we will have a special performance to enjoy featuring distinguished members of the Lyric Opera Stage Artists organization. You don’t want to miss this!
    • Stay to eat, drink, mix, and mingle, and maybe a few other surprises will be in store!

    Sensei Dwight Holley and Sensei Morris Lawrence are long-time mentors and friends, and we are excited to have them back with us again to serve as guest examiners and guest instructors.

    These classes are a great opportunity for all of us to learn from two outstanding and very experienced instructors who exemplify excellence in karate technique, knowledge, and character.

    There is no extra fee to participate in these classes.

    9:30-10:30 am – Kumite Drills with Sensei Morris Lawrence III

    Open to all ages and ranks.

    Sensei Morris Lawrence III is the Chief Instructor of the Ann Arbor Karate Club in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is a 7th dan in Shotokan, and teaches both Shotokan Karate and Cardio Kickboxing. He started Karate in 1981 and has extensive experience competing nationally and internationally.

    10:30-11:30 am – Kata Applications with Sensei Dwight Holley

    Open to brown and black belts only.

    Sensei Dwight Holley of Cincinnati Shotokan Karate-Do is the World Chief Instructor of Karate of Japan Federation International. With many decades of experience, Sensei Holley is a 9th dan in Shotokan, and author of Hidden Secrets of Karate-Do.
