Shotokan Karate

Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art popularized by Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957). “Shoto” was Funakoshi’s pen name (“pine waves”), which he used for his poetry, philosophical writings, and messages to his students. “Kan” signifies a house or building.  So, “Shotokan” was “Shoto’s place,” — the name of the hall where he trained his students.

Funakoshi emphasized Karate-Do, “The Way of Empty Hand”, as a path toward self-improvement and development of spirit and character, in addition to a physical endeavor. The philosophical principles of Shotokan emphasize humility, respect, compassion, patience, and both inward and outward calmness.

Shotokan Karate is known for its deep, strong stances and powerful techniques. Training focuses equally on the three elements of traditional karate:

  • Kihon: Basic Techniques
  • Kata: Forms or Formal Exercises
  • Kumite: Sparring

Karate offers a complete mind/body workout that develops physical strength and mental discipline. Classes include stretching, basic techniques (stances, punches, kicks, blocks), forms, and sparring.

Benefits of karate training include improvement of cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination. Karate also helps relieve stress and builds discipline, mental focus, and awareness.

As a dojo, Enso focuses on Shotokan Karate and training students the techniques and values associated with this martial art.  We also prepare students to participate in competitions that develop skills, character, and budo (martial way).
